ELKHART — One person is dead after a burglary at 1919 Frances Ave. around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Elkhart Police confirmed Danzele Johnson, 21, died after being shot Wednesday. Sgt. Steve Price said Wednesday night that police believe Johnson was an intruder in the burglary.

According to dispatchers, the caller/homeowner said that people had forced themselves into his home and that shots had been fired. When officers arrived, they found two people inside the house who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Police took one person into custody in the 1800 block of Frances Avenue after a short foot chase.

A juvenile was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released. Police had two juveniles in custody in connection with the incident Wednesday evening. Koch said that police are still investigating whether there are any other suspects.

Tabitha Bowe, who lives on Frances Avenue, said she was walking her children home from school when she saw police in front of 1919 Frances Ave. A window broke and police yelled to get down. Then she witnessed the police chasing after a person before catching him.

Denise Kline, who lives in the neighborhood, said that she and a friend and neighbor, Melissa Vandemark, saw police chasing someone down the alley behind Frances before apprehending him. Except for a few break-ins, they said the neighborhood is pretty quiet.

Tione, a witness who requested his last name not be used, said he had brought his children home from school when he saw several police officers carrying guns and walking down Frances Avenue. He also said he saw a man limping toward an ambulance and another man taken to a police car.

“Like four of them. They moved aside to let an ambulance through, but all of them had guns out, pointing there (at the house,)” he said.

Roosevelt Elementary School and Pierre Moran Middle School were locked down for some time after the incident.

Anne Mitchell, who is a pastor at Prairie Street Mennonite Church, said she’s lived in the neighborhood for 14 years and that it’s mostly a quiet neighborhood. The dead bolt on her garage was cut once and a close neighbor had a break-in.

“Nevertheless, I personally feel very safe where I live,” she said.
