Lt. Laura Koch, public information officer for the Elkhart Police Department, said she could not say the dead person’s part in the incident. She also could not give any identifying characteristics about the person. The person was pronounced dead at the scene by Elkhart Fire Department paramedics.
According to dispatchers, the caller/homeowner said that people had forced themselves into his home and that shots had been fired. When officers arrived, they found two people inside the house who had suffered gunshot wounds.
Police took one person into custody in the 1800 block of Frances Avenue after a short foot chase.
A juvenile was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where he was treated and released. Koch said that police are still looking to see if there’s another suspect.
EARLIER COVERAGE:
• Elkhart police are investigating a report of shooting this afternoon, Oct. 3, in the 1900 block of Frances Avenue. Officers are are also involved in a pursuit, according to dispatchers. The initial call came in around 2:20 p.m.
• At 3:15 p.m., Lt. Laura Koch reported one person has been transported to Elkhart General Hospital with a gunshot wound.
• Police were seeking two people who fled. They found one of them, she said.
• The lockdown of Roosevelt Elementary School and Pierre Moran Middle School has been lifted by police, she said.
• At 3:02 p.m., police expanded the crime scene, according to reporter Zina Kumok at the scene.
• At 2:54 p.m., Lt. Laura Koch of the Elkhart Police Department said the call was for a burglary in progress and shots fired. She does not have it confirmed that this is a shooting.
• At 2:49 p.m., Pierre Moran Middle School has been locked down, according to Elkhart Community Schools officials.
