A man is in custody Tuesday after a hit-and-run at the VFW, 1519 W. Bristol St., Elkhart.

According to Lt. Laura Koch of the Elkhart Police Department, the suspect fled in a vehicle and later fled on foot. He was taken into custody near the Highland Apartments on Elkhart’s northwest side.

Witnesses said that the man said he was the vice-president of the Dirty White Boys gang and had a tear-drop tattoo on his face, as well as tattoos on his neck. He was in the VFW for about an hour before the incident occurred, according to witnesses.

George Morehouse said that he saw the victim trying to pull the suspect out of a van. The suspect then reversed and went forward in the car at least two times, smashing the victim.

The victim was identified as Hal Spratt, according to his step-father, Mike Feeback. Feeback said Spratt was taken to Elkhart General Hospital.

The hospital did not release information about him.
