GOSHEN — Several summer construction projects started at Goshen College are now finished or winding down.

The largest project of the year has been creating a pedestrian underpass that will allow for the college’s students, along with walkers and bikers on the Winona Trail, to access both sides of the college’s campus even when a train is traveling or stopped on the tracks.

A major part of that construction happened on July 4, when workers were able to cut and remove a section of the tracks in order to dig a hole and place several structures creating the underpass’ corridor. Trains didn’t travel the tracks that day due to the holiday.

Construction workers have lately been working on the steps and the underpass is set to be completed and usable mid-November, according to Glenn Gilbert, utilities manager at Goshen College.

Near the underpass site is where the college has been installing a geothermal system that will heat and cool three college buildings.

Work has gone slower than expected, Gilbert said, but should be finished by mid-October, in time to help heat buildings as chillier weather arrives.

The new system will use ground water to heat and cool buildings, reducing the college’s energy use, and, in turn, the college’s carbon footprint, Gilbert explained earlier this year. Another major change to the campus was the renovation to the college’s Union, which now houses the Center for Intercultural and International Education.

Employees have moved into new offices in the building, though there are still a few finishing touches to come, Gilbert said. The college is also planning to renovate a lounge for commuter students yet this fall.

Through the summer, the college also replaced the roof of the college’s recreation-fitness center, the college’s running track and the windows in the Yoder dorm.
