Plane crashes on takeoff in Goshen; student pilot injured

One person was taken to the hospital Saturday morning following a plane crash at the Goshen Municipal Airport.

Roger Yoder, one of the owners of the New Horizons Aviation flight school, said the student — who Yoder described as a middle-aged man — was on a solo flight practicing some maneuvers when the accident happened during takeoff around 9 a.m. He said more details are not available pending further investigation.

The student was flying a Jaribu J-170, a two-seat light sport plane, and did not have life-threatening injuries. He was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital, Yoder said.

An inspector from the Federal Aviation Administration South Bend Office will be at the airport this afternoon, Sept. 29, to investigate what could have caused the accident.

“Sometimes the investigations are short and sweet and sometimes they take several days or weeks to figure out,” Yoder said.

He said flight lessons are available and are very common on Saturday mornings.

All sections of the airport are open with the exception of the taxiway.
