ELKHART — Kevin Meyer, the driver of the vehicle that struck Raymundo Sabag, 60, in the early morning of June 7, is being charged with failure to stop after an accident, a Class C felony, and could face a minimum of two years in prison.

Meyer, 18, of 1635 Chandler Blvd., appeared for his inital hearing in Superior Court 2 on Aug. 27, where he advised the judge he would hire a private attorney. Meyer was arrested Aug. 14 on a criminal warrant following an investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and the prosecutor’s office. He was released that same day on $10,000 bond.

According to the probable casue affidavit, Meyer told police he was driving a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville south on C.R. 17 and was on his way to work when he saw Sabag riding in the same direction as him, on the shoulder of the road. He said a car was driving left of his lane and he could not avoid the collision with Sabag, who he claimed swerved onto his path. Results from blood and urine testing were neagtive for drugs or alcohol.

Meyer told police he panicked and continued driving, acknowledging he didn’t stop at the scene of the accident.

During their investigation, police determined the bicycle was struck on a paved shoulder of C.R. 17.

Meyer is expected to appear for his next hearing on Nov. 12.
