The wall is located at 508 Oakland Ave., Elkhart. Veteran Don Fisher, who helped build the wall, spoke during the ceremony about the lives lost on that Tuesday morning.
“We are a nation that stands strong,” Fisher said.
Tim Neese, R-Elkhart, was the guest speaker at the event. He said the wall, which features fallen heroes in Indiana, is representative of the state of Indiana in its diversity. He recounted the people who died on Sept. 11 and said that it was a day to honor those in local communities who risk their lives every day for ordinary citizens.
“It was the purest form of bravery we’ve ever seen,” he said of the Sept. 11 heroes.
Fisher organized the Wall of Heroes’ construction and said he tries to have events there that celebrate veterans. He said that he had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get the wall constructed. Candles were distributed and lit while Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero” played over the speakers.
“We will always be proud,” Fisher said of his country.
