ELKHART — Remnants of Hurricane Isaac could make their way to northern Indiana by Labor Day weekend.

The Gulf Coast hurricane made landfall in Louisiana on Tuesday, but as the storm weakens, the rain will be pushed northward. National Weather Service meteorologist John Taylor said the storm will probably move northwest and curve northeast toward Indiana.

“It’s a long way off, but we could get some rain in our area by Saturday or Sunday from it,” Taylor said.

Today, Aug. 30, is expected to be sunny and hot with a high temperature of 93 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The weekend will likely bring slightly cooler temperatures and a 40 percent chance of showers.

The storm’s track remains somewhat questionable, so heavy rainfall is not guaranteed near Elkhart County, Taylor added. The storm will likely maintain some tropical characteristics by boosting moisture and humidity along its path.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has issued an air quality warning today for Elkhart and St. Joseph counties, marking the 21st Air Quality Action Day in Michiana since the beginning of this year. Meteorologists are predicting weather conditions that contribute to high levels of ozone pollution.

IDEM suggests taking the following actions to help lower emissions that form ozone:

• Bike, walk, carpool or take the bus

• Perform regular vehicle maintenance

• Conserve fuel by combining trips

• Refuel your car in the evening
