K-9 retires from Elkhart Police Department

Elkhart Police Department K-9 member Neko was retired Aug. 22 after seven years of service to the community. The 9-year-old dog will stay with the handler, upon the handler’s request.

Neko worked patrol and narcotic detection, assisting in the apprehension of more than 80 suspects. He also located more than 15 pounds of narcotics and assisted in the seizure of up to $15,000.
Sgt. Jack Oldroyd, Neko’s handler and companion, requested a transfer of ownership, and will be responsible for all liability and expenses regarding Neko.
With Neko as a part of the K-9 Unit, the Elkhart Police Department had seven trained dogs.
