A member of the k-9 unit was retired because of health-related issues. Neko, a 9-year-old dog, was retired Aug. 23. He worked at the Elkhart Police Department for seven years.

Neko worked patrol and narcotic detection, assisting in the apprehension of more than 80 suspects. He also located more than 15 pounds of narcotics and assisted in the seizure of up to $15,000.

Sgt. Jack Oldroyd, Neko’s handler and companion, requested a transfer of ownership, and will be responsible for all liability and expenses regarding Neko.

With Neko as a part of the K-9 Unit, the Elkhart Police Department had seven trained dogs.
