Baugo Township firefighters douse small fires at Soil Solutions
The wood recycling operation, formerly known as VIM Recycling, has come under fire from neighbors who complain of dust and other emissions from the plant. A massive blaze at the facility in 2007, before Soil Solutions took over, stretched over four days and killed a worker.
The incidents on Saturday and Sunday were “very minor,” however, according to Baugo Township Fire Department Chief Chad Carey. Processing mulch, one of the primary products at Soil Solutions, creates heat, which led to the fires.
Soil Solutions, located on Old U.S. 33 west of Elkhart, takes steps to prevent such fires and Carey said the firm was redoubling its efforts. Baugo Township firefighters doused the fires, then Soil Solutions workers spread the mulch piles in question apart to further minimize the potential of a fire.
Baugo Township firefighres doused small fires at Soil Solutions in April and March and responded to calls about steaming wood piles on two occasions in February.
