MILLERSBURG — A man was taken to a hospital for back pain after his pickup truck collided with two cows in the road south of Millersburg Friday evening.

John McCallister, 25, of Goshen, was traveling north on S.R. 13 just north of C.R. 146 at about 10 p.m. when two black cows came out of a cornfield onto the road, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

McCallister told police that he tried to swerve, but was unable to avoid hitting the cows. He complained of pain in the lower back and was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital where he was treated and released.

According to police, the owner of the cows was located and warned about the loose animals.

There was no word on the condition of the cows.
