ELKHART — Friends and family stopped by the house on Kilbourn Street to leave flowers and give words of encouragement to Kristyana Jackson’s family Monday morning.

Jackson, 7, was pronounced dead Sunday at 1:40 p.m. after being shot in the head Friday night. Her mother and father, Kimi and John Jackson, arrived home early Monday morning from Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where Kristyana Jackson passed away.

Kristyana and her mother were rushed by three individuals in front of their home Friday night after they had arrived from a football game, said Barbara Lamb, Kristyana’s grandmother. John Jackson stepped outside after he heard his wife scream and was shot three times, taking two bullets on his left arm and one on his back. He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released late Friday night.

Lamb said Kristyana passed away Sunday, after having had a surgery Saturday evening. Kimi decided to donate her daughter’s kidneys and liver.

“She was a really good student, a very good young lady, she was a leader,” Lamb said. “If she came up with an idea, the other kids went with it.”

Neighbors, friends and family gathered at the Jacksons’ home Sunday and left flowers, candles and teddy bears with messages for Kristyana. Those items sat in the porch and on the corner of Kilbourn and Myrtle Streets Monday. Lamb also noted someone had cut the grass for the family too.

Brenda Miltroka, a caregiver who knew Kristyana at Mary Daly Elementary, was one a few family friends who stopped by Monday morning and left a sign with balloons and flowers for Kristyana’s family.

“She was such a go-getter, all the time,” she said. “I really enjoyed being with her and taking care of her.”
