GOSHEN — Elkhart County will temporarily lift restrictions on fireworks at the end of this month.

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to allow residents to light consumer fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county during a four-day window around Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 3.

Fireworks will be allowed between 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 and between 10 a.m. and two hours after sunset on Sept. 3. The amendment only applies to this year, Commissioner Frank Lucchese noted. Since 2007, the county has prohibited the use of fireworks at all times except for a 10-day span around July 4, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

“They are not permitted right now,” Lucchese said.

Commissioner Mike Yoder added that not everyone is on board with the county’s decision to allow fireworks for the Labor Day, but he’s received several phone calls from residents asking when they can ignite leftover fireworks bought for the Fourth of July. The county was under a burn ban that restricted the use of fireworks from June 15 until the end of July, so many people who bought fireworks for the holiday did not get to light them, Yoder said.

As of Monday afternoon, 30 Indiana counties were still reporting bans on open burning.
