GOSHEN — Maple City Health Care Center has received a National Summit Award for innovation in its More Than Money program.

The More Than Money program helps unemployed or uninsured patients volunteer in the community in turn for credits that can be used to pay for health care, including patients with chronic diseases who may need regular health care. Some patients continue to volunteer after leaving the program.

The center also uses a sliding discount for low-income patients.

The award is part of the National Summit on Community Health Center Lending and Innovation. It includes a $20,000 grant and an invitation to a national summit held in Detroit, Mich. this September. The summit will focus on advancement of health care in low-income neighbors. Maple City Health Care Center will showcase the More Than Money program at the summit.

The center is one of five organizations recognized with the award for its innovative approaches to primary care and health and wellness initiatives for low-income communities.

Maple City Health Care Center serves 2,500 people a year. Earlier this year, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recognized it as a Federally Qualified Health Center and the center received the Premier Health Award from the Indiana Public Health Foundation in 2010.
