ELKHART — Amy Thompson cooled just a bit from the sizzling pace she set a day earlier, but was still plenty warm enough Tuesday to tie her own record and easily win her third straight Elkhart County Women’s Golf Tournament.
After shooting a 70 during Monday’s opening round at Meadow Valley in Middlebury, she added a 73 in the second and final round at Christiana Creek Country Club to match the event standard of 143 that she set just last year.
“I’m pretty excited,” the Wakarusa resident and University of Indianapolis standout said of claiming the 37th annual county crown. “Winning any tournament three years in a row is an accomplishment.”
Haley King of Elkhart, a Colorado State golfer, was second, 13 shots behind Thompson at 156 after shooting a 77 Tuesday.
“It’s a little more laid back than a lot of tournaments,” said Thompson, who’s won all three of the county tourneys she’s entered. “It’s a fun atmosphere. Everybody’s there to have fun.”
Thompson finished her two rounds at 1 under par, with three birdies and one bogey on Monday, then two birdies and three bogeys Tuesday.
“I wish a couple more putts would’ve fallen,” Thompson said of the closing round, “but I was pleased overall. I was hitting the ball fairly well. I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens — missed three or four greens all day — so that was good.”
Thompson’s record-setting 143 a year ago came at Black Squirrel and Maplecrest in Goshen.
A 2010 NorthWood High School graduate, Thompson is entering her junior year at Indianapolis, where she is studying marketing and entrepreneurship.
As a sophomore last season for the NCAA Division II Greyhounds, she notched one of five All-Great Lakes Valley Conference spots and was named an All-American Scholar by the national coaches’ association.
Other gross score champions Tuesday included Chris Dose (Second Flight), Corinne King (Third), Laura Asbury (Fourth) and Mike Wilson-Werner (Fifth). Gross score winners were excluded from consideration for low net honors.
In Fourth Flight, Asbury chopped 22 strokes off her Monday score, then beat Jessica Elliott in a three-hole playoff to complete a second-day rise from last to first.
In the Senior Division, Brenda McBryde beat Sandy Coy in a three-hole playoff for the net title after each player finished at 155.
