The donation will allow IUSB to show between three and five fully-staged theatre productions at the Lerner every summer.
Cogan has worked in corporate communications and is known in the area for her time working for Miles Laboratories in Elkhart. She studied speech and debate at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb., and journalism at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She credits her experience in Nebraska to her success later in life.
“I just believe firmly that anyone who has a little experience of walking across a stage or memorizing a part and doing it successfully builds confidence,” she said. “We certainly need more of that in more leaders.”
She will be publicly recognized for her gift on Thursday, Aug. 9, at the Lerner Theatre during the performance “A Raisin in the Sun.” Cogan said she also attended the series’ performance of “H.M.S Pinafore.”
Cogan said she approached the Lerner Theatre about collaborating with them. They had already set up the series with IUSB and she decided to help contribute to that project.
“I have had a very meaningful life,” she said. “I’m now in my 80s and thinking back on what I’ve done and what I’ve had. I thought now, how did I get this way? So I knew a lot of it had to do with the theater.”
“A Raisin in the Sun” is the final performance in the inaugural summer theatre series put on by the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IUSB. The show features a cast of 11, nine of which are IUSB students.
Tickets for “A Raisin in the Sun” are available at the Lerner Box Office for $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. Tickets may be purchased by calling 293-4469 or 294-8223. The theater is at 410 S. Main St., Elkhart.
