SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges following an arrest at an off campus party in May.

Rees pleaded guilty to illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor (Class C) and one count of resisting arrest (Class A). Prosecutors dropped the second resisting law enforcement charge and a charge of battery, both Class A misdemeanors.

The plea agreement for Rees includes a 30-day suspended sentence, 11 months of administrative probation, 50 hours of community service and a letter of apology to officers involved.

Notre Dame released an official statement from Rees shortly after his charges were announced.

“I apologize to my family, friends, the Notre Dame community, Fighting Irish fans and the South Bend Police Department for my actions this spring,” Rees said in the statement. “I made a poor decision and I accept full responsibility.

“I learned a valuable lesson and witnessed first-hand that actions have consequences. This experience will make me a better person and I will focus on being a positive role model and citizen.

“To those who supported me during this difficult time, I offer my sincerest thanks. To the people I disappointed, I am dedicated to winning back your trust and confidence.”

Rees will appear back in court on Aug. 20 to determine the amount of restitution to be repaid.

Rees, 19, was arrested alongside linebacker Carlo Calabrese, 21, at a house party near campus. Police arrived on the scene in response to a noise complaint, and Rees jumped the backyard fence and fled.

According to police, Rees ran onto Notre Dame Avenue, when a cab driver saw the pursuit and blocked Rees's path. Police attempted to apprehend Rees, but he “used his right knee to hit (South Bend police) Officer (Brandon) Stec in the lower chest area, knocking the wind out of him,” the police report stated.

Police used pepper spray to subdue Rees before taking him to jail.

Notre Dame's pre-season camp begins Aug. 4.
