GOSHEN — This morning’s showers have moved off and attendance is picking up today, July 23, at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.

So far, the fair has seen higher attendance than over the past several years.

There were more paid admissions Friday than on any opening day since 2007, and Saturday was the best first Saturday of the fair since 2006, according to Sharon Wogoman, the fair board member who oversees the ticket takers.

There’s no official estimate for Sunday’s numbers yet, since Sunday is free-admission day, but crowds packed the fairgrounds.

“It’s been the perfect situation for fairgoers,” said Tim Yoder, the board member who oversees concessions. The temperatures haven’t been so hot that they drive down food sales, but they’ve been warm enough to keep drink sales high, and concessionaires are doing better so far than they have over the last several years, Yoder said today.

Shelley Rody said the Elkhart General Hospital tent between the grandstands and the midway has seen a lot of traffic so far. “It’s been just great,” she said.

Fair traffic fluctuates with the weather, but Phil Wogoman, the fair board’s weather tracker, said the AccuWeather forecasts he’s getting call for only spotty showers over the next few days.
