The Volcano Pizza fans lined up early and stayed until the sausage sandwiches were gone last week at Easy Shopping Place.
The Easy Shopping Place location has offered the grilled sausage, green pepper and fried onion sandwiches on a fresh bun a couple July days since the late 1970s. This year, Fritz and Michelle Campanello and their crew were busy as usual. They battled less heat, but the rain Thursday took down a tent and they had to replace it, Fritz said.
The sale is billed as being from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for two days, but people were lining up at 9:30 and the sandwiches were gone by about 2:30 Wednesday and Thursday, he said.
“It was a lot of fun,” he added.
News of the sandwiches reached a national television network's site and broadcast, he said.
The family had a laugh at my expense after I made a mistake in last week's column. I said Fritz was married to Renee, but that's his sister-in-law, prompting him to comment that the family is close, but not that close. My apologies.
• Sports Time Family Pub & Grill is offering its own fair food for the third year. The restaurant at 56199 Parkway Ave., Elkhart, has a menu with items similar to those offered at a county fair. “We support the fair and encourage others to do so as well. This is to offer to those people who might not get a chance to go or can only go once and yet want more,” said owner Cristy Eldridge. The items will be available through Sunday.
• A number of readers got free tickets for barbecue from Greater Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church last week. Some got them by telling me why they deserved them. Others got them for answering a trivia question correctly on the Dining A La King Facebook page.
• I was happy to see the new Northern Indiana Foodie Trail highlight four good Elkhart County restaurants last week. Das Dutchman Essenhaus, Kelly Jae's Cafe, Antonio's and Venturi Pizza are the four chose for the seven-county list with 28 total restaurants. There could be others, but those represent the county well.
• Reader Kris H. responded to a Quick Bite last week and suggested a filet mignon for less than $15. She said her boyfriend orders The Longhorn at Between the Buns and tells them to hold the bread. The steak comes with one side. “He likes it and he's pretty picky about food!” she wrote in an email.
