The Elkhart County 4-H Clown Club brought its act to the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Saturday, hamming it up and generating laughs, yuks and groans at the Park Stage.
During one part of the show, Lulu, also known as Bonnie Passerallo of Elkhart, painted a picture of Bakfire, also known as Colin Mikel of New Paris. She was going to capture his inner self on canvas, she said.
What resulted was a painting of a monkey.
“That’s a monkey,” said Backfire.
“It is the inner you. You’re a monkey,” answered Lulu.
Also taking the stage were Princess Pickles (Samantha Florea of Elkhart), Duckie (Cassidy Conrad of New Paris), Bubbles (Katie Pollock of Goshen), Glimmer (Danielle Hardesty of Goshen) and Clover (Caylin Stutsman of Elkhart).
“I love making the children smile and laugh so much,” Lulu, sporting purple locks, said off stage.
“I love being able to wear a lot of makeup,” joked Princess Pickles, with green hair.
Debbie Pinnegar, one of the adult organizers of the group (and Buttonz up on stage), said the aim of the club is to teach the art or clowning. Along the way, participants learn some other, perhaps more practical things — teamwork and responsibility.
Clowning around, though, seems to be the big thing for group members, not surprisingly.
“It’s fun to go up to people you know and say, ‘I know you,’ and freak them out,” said Clover. Other clowns seconded that.
“Complete and total randomness,” said Duckie.
The Clown Club takes part in the Elkhart County 4-H Fair parade today, July 22, and performs again on Wednesday at 4 p.m., also at Park Stage.
