GOSHEN — A man standing in front of the Dew Drop Inn unintentionally did just that today, July 21.

A hole opened in the sidewalk at the corner of the building at 227 S. Main St., and a man fell through into a room below, according to Chief Dan Sink of the Goshen Fire Department.

The man wasn’t seriously hurt. He was conscious and alert at the scene, but was taken to IU Health Goshen for treatment, Sink said.

“He was very lucky,” Sink said.

Firefighters investigated and found the sidewalk concrete was poured on top of a wood frame, which was broken underneath, he said. The water and gas lines are intact, but the building owner will have to fix the issue.

A number of the old buildings and sidewalks downtown have empty spaces below them because space was needed decades ago to store coal, Sink said.

The area will likely have police tape around it so that people can’t enter it during Sunday’s Elkhart County 4-H Fair parade, which draws thousands of spectators downtown.
