The Master Gardeners are volunteers who have taken 18 classes, each about three hours long, completed at least 45 hours of volunteer work and passed a test to earn the status, according to Jeff Burbrink, Elkhart County extension educator.
They become experts in insects, soils, flowers, trees, shrubs and other plants, Burbrink said.
Each year, the group shares information and tips on local gardening issues during the week of the fair.
This year’s talks include topics on vegetable gardening, lawn care, emerald ash borer control and rain gardens and rain barrels. On Kids Day on Wednesday, each of the three talks will be about gardening with kids. On Thursday, Sonya Nash of the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau and a Master Gardener will lead three talks on the Elkhart County Quilt Gardens.
Master Gardeners are also available throughout the week at the fair’s Ag Hall. Burbrink said that the Master Gardeners can recap talks that visitors missed, provide more information about displays in Ag Hall and answer questions about issues or problems people are having with their own plants. In fact, Burbrink said, if a fairgoer has a particular question about a plant, that person is welcome to bring a sample of the plant along for the Master Gardener to see.
Here is the schedule for the Master Gardeners Talks during the fair.
All Master Gardener Talks are in Ag Hall on the fairgrounds.
