The cemetery reopened after the city worked to make initial repairs to an eroded area that borders the Elkhart River. Mayor Dick Moore locked the cemetery Sunday because of safety concerns.
The city worked Tuesday morning to stabilize the riverbank with dirt and create a larger area between the riverbank and gravesites where the land had eroded, the mayor said. Moore noted that no vaults have been damaged because of erosion.
“We have discontinued that operation and a contractor will be selected to begin the erosion remedial process soon,” Moore said in a news release. “To continue to fill the riverbank might require the contractor to remove it before starting the remedial effort.”
As part of the city’s work to fortify the land near the Elkhart River, snow fencing has been installed along the riverbank.
Police and emergency management will regularly patrol the grounds, and cemetery personnel will inspect the area daily.
