ELKHART — Kevin Ganger runs an annual errand for the women in his office.

He stood in line for around an hour Wednesday morning to get sausage sandwiches from a parking lot at Easy Shopping Place.

But he wasn’t just standing in line for them. He got at least one of the sandwiches for himself.

He’s one of hundreds who are gathering Wednedsay and today to purchase the sandwiches. Fritz and Michelle Campanello are overseeing a crew to sell thousands of the sandwiches from charcoal grills and tents in a parking lot near one of their Greg’s Volcano Pizza restaurants.

“It’s just one of those traditional things,” said Don Stephic, who once worked for Volcano and joined others in line for the sausage patty grilled over charcoal and put on a fresh bun with a slab of green pepper and fried onions.

Stephic said he remembers when G.L. Perry was in the plaza and the sandwiches were sold as part of a sidewalk shopping event. Volcano has been selling the sandwiches as part of the special event since the late 1970s, Fritz Campanello said.

Stephic had to leave his spot in line, but a family member came and purchased sandwiches for him.

The line Wednesday morning was about 50 people around 10:15 a.m. and may have doubled by 11:15.

The sandwiches are $5.40 with tax. They’re available until 4 p.m. today or until the operation sells out. Large orders can be called in at 295-8606.
