ELKHART — A business contingent from Elkhart County, St. Joseph County and Benton Harbor, Mich., is going to Washington, D.C. to discuss issues of import to the zone with federal lawmakers.

The representatives, numbering around 30, go today, July 18, for a two-day trip. They come from the Elkhart, Goshen and St. Joseph County chambers of commerce as well as the Benton Harbor-based Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce.

Meetings are scheduled with U.S. Reps. Joe Donnelly, D-Granger, and Marlin Stutzman, R-Howe, as well as U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, a Republican who represents southwest Michigan. The group will also meet with Indiana’s two U.S. senators, Dick Lugar and Dan Coats, both Republicans.

On the agenda will be the recent U.S. Supreme Court health care ruling, immigration and the Main Street Fairness Act, a measure requiring that online and mail-order retailers collect local and state sales taxes.

The visitors will also meet with federal policymakers.
