Quick Bites: Hungry for a Volcano sausage sandwich?

For decades, the third week of July has meant there's a line in the parking lot at Easy Shopping Place in Elkhart.
Greg's Volcano Pizza has done sausage sandwich days for more than 30 years. Owner Fritz Campanello says they may have started in 1978. This year the sandwiches will be sold from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Sales will end before 4 p.m. if they're sold out, which is likely, Fritz said.
For a couple July days, Fritz and others, including spouse Michelle Campanello, sell what he said is “many thousands” of sandwiches. (Editor's note - The initial version of this story had the name of Fritz's spouse incorrect. Sorry for the error.)
The charcoal grills smoke as the sausage patties cook. The patties go on fresh buns with green peppers and onions. The fans line up and buy in quantity.
No matter the weather or other challenges of creating an outdoor restaurant that's not part of the usual pizza and sandwich business, the Campanellos sell sandwiches. And fans are grateful.
Sandwiches will be $5.05 plus tax, Fritz said. Those wanting large orders can call the store at 574-295-8606.
• Friday and Saturday the Greater Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church is having another barbecue sale. Dinners are $6.50 to $10.50. Hours are 11 a.m. until sold out at 1829 Oakland Avenue, Elkhart. I have a number of free tickets again and will be happy to share with readers. You can tell me why you deserve one. I'll also be giving them away on the Dining A La King Facebook page this week.
• A new general manager is starting soon at Maple City Market, 314 S. Main St., Goshen. Kum Ng is a chef who has been living in Madison, Wis., and will be moving to the area with his family. Public open houses are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1 and the night of First Friday, according to Phyllis Miller, who is on the customer-owned co-op that sells natural foods and other products.
• A reader called last week to ask where he could celebrate his 60th anniversary with a filet mignon, but he didn't want it to be expensive. He wanted to pay $12 to $15 a meal. That may have been possible at one point in his marriage and it may be possible now, but it's hard to find the premium cut of steak at that price. He said he planned to go to Heinnie's, which won last year's Steak Quest.
• Texas Roadhouse trumpeted that Consumer Reports named it the noisiest chain restaurant in the United States. “We are proud to be loud,” said Kent Taylor, founder and chief executive officer, in a press release. The Elkhart location made a different kind of noise on July 8 when it raised $6,500 and 250 pounds of food for Church Community Services.
• I don't plan on becoming a full-blown vegetarian, but if I did I'd eat more of the eggplant parmigiana at Michael's Italian Restaurant, 528 Harrison St., Elkhart. It's meaty and rich. The eggplant is sheathed inside a good breading and the hearty tomato sauce and cheese go along with it.
