Police find 6 kilos of heroin during traffic stop on Indiana Toll Road Wednesday
Indiana State Trooper Ted Bohner stopped a 1999 Honda Accord on the toll road for a moving violation near the 90-mile marker, near S.R. 19. The passengers, Lafaithia Dawkins, 56, and her daughter, Kia Williams, 22, told Bohner they drove from Philadelphia to Merrillville to go shopping at the mall, according to a press release from Indiana State Police.
Bohner called his shift partner, K-9 State Trooper Nicholas Meade and his police dog, Saber, to conduct an open-air sniff around the vehicle. Saber gave the alert that illegal drugs were in the car, according to police, and Bohner secured a search warrant for the vehicle.
Six kilos of heroin, valued at more than $300,000, were found in an arm rest, according to police. Officers also confiscated about $5,000 cash.
Dawkins and Williams, both of Philadelphia, were arrested on preliminary drug trafficking and dealing charges and are incarcerated at the Elkhart County jail awaiting a bond hearing.
