Elkhart victims of heat-related deaths identified

The two people from Elkhart who died from heat-related conditions have been identified as an 84-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man.

Kathleen Hyre, 84, lived in the 900 block of West Lusher Avenue.

Michael Bowen, 45, lived in the 900 block of McPherson Street.

Both lived in older buildings without air conditioning. The deaths were caused by hyperthermia, according to Elkhart County Coroner John White.

Three other people in Indiana and 18 in Chicago were among more than 50 people who reportedly died from heat-related deaths in recent days from the heat wave the had engulfed much of the United States last week.
