BRISTOL — A single-car crash killed a man early this morning.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Jared Lay, 22, was northbound on C.R. 23 south of C.R. 14 around 4:47 a.m. when his Jeep Wrangler left the roadway and hit a ditch, tree stump, mailbox and post. He was ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle continued northbound off the road and hit another ditch, mailbox and a tree before rolling onto its side.

Lay was pronounced dead at the scene by medics and the Elkhart County Coroner John White, according to a police report.

The crash, which no one witnessed, is being investigated by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department’s Crash Investigation Team.
