ELKHART — An 18-year-old Elkhart man is in police custody for his involvement in a non-fatal shooting of an investigator from the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office.

Elkhart police officers arrested Guillermo Belmares during their investigation.

Investigator Dave Floerchinger was in his vehicle and attempting to serve a warrant in the 500 block of Sherman Street early July 4, according to a press release from the Elkhart Police Department. Floerchinger called for assistance at 12:19 a.m. as people approached the car. He identified himself as a member of law enforcement and one person discharged a gun in Floerchinger’s direction, according to the press release. Floerchinger and his vehicle were struck.

He was evaluated at Elkhart General Hospital and has been released.

A probable cause hearing for Belmares is scheduled for Saturday.
