Two taken to jail for using fireworks
Jay Zheng, 25, of 1213 Westwood Drive and Joe Dorbin, 29, of 14368 Redfox Drive, Granger, were arrested for violation of an emergency order, a Class B misdemeanor, and taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
At 4:13 p.m. Wednesday, Goshen officers were called to 1213 Westwood Drive, where they found a grass fire that had spread to neighboring lawns and was moving north to Elkhart Road. Goshen Fire Department was able to extinguish blaze but four nearby yards were damaged or destroyed. No structural damage or injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Local residents then told police that the grass fire had been sparked by individuals who had been lighting fireworks at an Independence Day gathering.
Fireworks are currently banned in Elkhart County under a Disaster Emergency Proclamation issued by the Elkhart County Commissioners. Officials have prohibited the use of fireworks because of the risk of fire due to the drought.
