GOSHEN — There was a short delay Monday morning with the delivery of one of the structures that will eventually be a part of the pedestrian underpass on Goshen College’s campus.

Nine preformed square structures, weighing more than 20 tons apiece, came from Indianapolis to Goshen Monday, each on its own semitrailer. On Wednesday, construction workers will install the boxes into the ground on Goshen College’s campus to create the corridor of the Winona Trail Bike and Pedestrian Underpass.

According to Glenn Gilbert, Goshen College’s utilities manager and sustainability coordinator, at about 10:30 a.m. , the weight of one of the structures caused one of the semis to break an axle as it turned from Main Street onto College Avenue.

Gilbert said a tow truck and construction equipment from the underpass worksite on campus worked to transfer the structure to another semi and to move the broken semi from the intersection.

The structures are now where they need to be on campus and ready for installation Wednesday.
