GOSHEN — A Goshen man who works for the Elkhart Street Department is scheduled to admit to a judge this week that he possessed child pornography.

Stephen P. Sachs, 52, filed a written plea agreement in U.S. District Court in South Bend. Judge Robert Miller scheduled Sachs for a hearing Tuesday afternoon, where Sachs will verbally admit to possessing sexual material featuring children.

Sachs, a truck driver for the street department, “is still employed and working. Once he is convicted, we will take appropriate action per our policy,” wrote Vicci Moore, city human resources department head, in a message Friday to The Elkhart Truth.

In his plea deal, Sachs admitted to having more than 600 images of children younger than 12 and that he got some of the images and videos in 2009 and 2010.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies raided his home at 523 Broadmore Estates July 25, 2010, and seized three computers, a personal-digital device, four hard drives and a flash drive, all of which contained child porn, according to the plea document.

A federal grand jury indicted Sachs in February, and federal agents arrested him at the Elkhart Street Department Feb. 23.

At his sentencing Sachs faces from five to 20 years in federal prison. The U.S. Attorney’s office agreed to recommend the judge give Sachs credit for accepting responsibility.

Sachs also agreed to forfeit various computers and storage drives to the government.
