An 18-year-old Elkhart man is in critical condition at South Bend Memorial Hospital after a one-car crash in Elkhart last night.

Forrest Howard was traveling east on Greenleaf Boulevard when his car left the roadway and hit a brick mailbox, according to a press release from Elkhart County Sheriff’s Dept.

The car continued moving, hitting three more mailboxes, a tree, a utility pole, and several trash cans before finally stopping. Howard was transported to the hospital for head injuries.

Howard was the only person in the car and was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the press release.

The Elkhart County Crash Investigative Team is still investigating what caused the accident. Speed is being looked into as a factor, according to Capt. Jim Bradbury.
