Elkhart officials to decide whether city fireworks event will take place
Assistant Chief Shaun Edgerton from the Elkhart Fire Department said during a board of public safety meeting that the fire department, as well as the Elkhart Parks and Recreation Department, will meet to discuss whether to hold the fireworks display.
The rest of the activities that take place on the Fourth of July will not be cancelled, but if the fireworks display is suspended, all other activities will be moved to McNaughton Park, Parks and Recreation Department superintendent Karin Frey said.
Although the county burn ban does not cover fireworks, Edgerton said he would prefer to see residents not use them, especially bottle rockets or other fireworks that move in unpredictable ways.
Frey said even if the fireworks display takes place, individuals are prohibited from using fireworks on parks.
“Anytime and every time we tell residents sparklers are not permitted,” she said. “Because they don't think of the heat that comes from the sparklers when they're used that would certainly start a fire.”
