RESTON, Va. — The recreational vehicle industry continued to outperform 2011.

Motorhomes recovered from a disappointing April to outpace May 2011 by 5.8 percent while towables trumped year-over-year results by 4.8 percent.

January through May, shipments totaled 127,454 RVs, an 8.6 percent over the same period in 2011. Towables has been leading the surge with 115,204 units, topping last year’s numbers by 9.8 percent. Motorhomes, on the other hand, are still struggling. That division has shipped 12,250 units year-to-date, 1.2 percent under 2011 numbers.
