GOSHEN — Goshen Community Schools approved a recommendation Monday night that will establish a preschool program beginning next school year.

Tamra Ummel, Goshen’s executive director of elementary education, and Mary Kay Longacre, Goshen’s Title I program director, presented a report to the school board conducted by a committee consisting of teachers, administrators and community members.

The board unanimously approved the committee’s recommendation to initiate the program for the 2012-13 school year.

The early childhood program will have two classrooms offering half-day instruction, with children attending either mornings or afternoons, four days a week. Each classroom will have an instructor and a full-time assistant.

An increase in Title I funds will allow Goshen schools to pay for the program solely with those funds. According to Ummel, the program will cost roughly $183,500.

Leftover Title I funds will be used to add Prairie View and Waterford elementary schools as Title I eligible schools.
