Four area golfers win first-round matches at Girls State Junior

FRANKLIN — Goshen’s Heather Gladfelter and Mary Shipley, Nappanee’s Heather Morganthaler and Millersburg’s Brittany Gingerich all won first-round flight matches Thursday in the 62nd Girls State Junior Golf Championships at Hillview Country Club.

Elkhart’s Brenna Sherwood and Granger’s Katie Willenbrink bowed in the first round of championship flight matches. Bristol’s Hannah Whisler was beaten in her first second-flight match.

Gladfelter defeated Carmel’s Sophie Kelner 3-and-1. Shipley defeated Plainfield’s Kayle Benge in 19 holes. Morganthaler defeated Avon’s Annie Rodgers 3-and-2. Gingerich defeated Lafayette’s Samantha Hatter 3-and-2.

Madison’s Amanda Detmer defeated Sherwood 3-and-2. Richmond’s Erin Ingram defeated Willenbrink 1-up. Jasper’s Annie Getzin defeated Whisler 4-and-2.

Two match-play rounds were scheduled for today, the first to begin at 7:30 a.m.
