GOSHEN — Bright colors now decorate what had been a plain concrete wall on Goshen’s north side.

Last week, neighborhood families and kids from nearby Chamberlain Elementary and the Boys & Girls Club of Goshen finished much of the painting on the mural called “Elements” along a stretch of Goshen’s Middlebury Street.

Waves of blue intermingle in the southern section of the mural, highlighting water. The middle of the mural includes yellow rectangles on a large red surface, representing homes. The northern section of the mural depicts an abstract view of Goshen’s industrial landscape, highlighting the railroad tracks that cross the city, explained Leah Cassidy-Borden, an artist who lives in the neighborhood and designed the mural.

She’ll do some touch-up work and apply a final clear coat with ultraviolet protection later, but the base painting of the mural is done.

The idea for the mural came out of a planning session a few Goshen residents attended last fall through LaCasa, Inc. at a NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute conference.

So far responses have been positive, Cassidy-Borden said. She’s heard much of that feedback while working on the mural.

While Cassidy-Borden and kids from the Boys & Girls Club painted Friday morning, an SUV slowed down and the driver shouted “nice job” out her window.

That’s not unusual, Cassidy-Borden said. Walkers often stop and talk with her on the sidewalk by the mural and drivers often slow down, honk their horns or shout out compliments at the mural.

The mural should be entirely finished by early August, she said.
