The crash was the second fatal car-bicycle collision in Elkhart today, June 7.
The bicyclists, 18-year-old David Anglemyer of Goshen and 19-year-old Daniel Runion of Goshen, were traveling east on C.R. 20 east of Pleasant Plain when they were struck by a westbound 2003 Ford Taurus driven by 42-year-old Daniel Snead of Elkhart around 5:50 a.m., according to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
At least one of the bicycles had a flashing red light, according to police, but neither bicyclist wore a helmet or other safety gear.
No citations were issued at the scene.
The crash followed another fatal car-bicycle crash just a couple hours earlier, around 3:35 a.m., on C.R. 17 just south of the U.S. 20 Bypass. The bicyclist in that crash, 60-year-old Raymundo Macjado Sabag of Elkhart, died. The driver fled from the scene prior to police arrival in the C.R. 17 crash.
Elkhart County police continue to investigate both crashes this morning.
Police are asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run to call the Elkhart County Dispatch Center at 533-4151.
