ELKHART — Elkhart County’s unemployment rate continues to fall with April turning in a rate of 8.7 percent.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development released the state, county and city figures today, May 18.

Since January 2012, the local jobless rate has steadily dropped from 11.2 percent. In April 2011, the rate was 10.5 percent with 81,475 residents employed, compared to the current 86,377 residents who were working in April 2012.

Statewide the seasonally unadjusted rate fell to 7.7 percent from 8.6 percent in March. The decline was driven by job gains in every super sector of employment including manufacturing, which created 6,200 new positions in April.

The city of Elkhart posted an unemployment rate of 11.0 percent in April, down from 11.9 percent in March and 12.8 percent in April 2011.

Similarly the city of Goshen dropped to 8.3 percent in April unemployment from 9.3 percent one month ago and 10.8 percent a year ago.
