Smith, 12, of Elkhart, died of a blunt force trauma of the head, Magdalinski said. She was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m., he said.
Smith was hit by a red 1997 Ford Ranger while walking west on the north side of C.R. 108 at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. The driver, Norman Yeaky, 56, of Edwardsburg, Mich., was heading west on C.R. 108 when he collided with Smith on the front passenger side of his vehicle.
She was a fifth-grader at Woodland Elementary School, according to Elkhart Community Schools officials.
No enforcement action was taken against Yeaky as the Elkhart County Crash Investigation Team is investigating the collision, according to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.
