Elkhart city firefighters, with the help of the Clay Township Fire Tech team from South Bend, removed the man from the hole located at 114 Wagner Street.
According to Brian Bemiller, assistant fire chief in Elkhart, the man, described as being age 20-25, became stuck around 6:40 p.m. When the rescue teams pulled him out of the hole around 8:15 p.m., he was conscious and alert.
The man was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment.
The Penn Township, St. Joseph County, Warsaw and Niles, Mich., fire departments assisted on the scene.
