The alarm was sounded around 6 p.m., and firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from a semitrailer parked at a loading dock. The fire department said in a press release Tuesday evening that the fire started among aerosol canisters in the trailer.
Middlebury Street between Los Angeles and Middleton Run was blocked off by emergency vehicles, but crews quickly controlled the fire and the street reopened just after 7 p.m. No injuries were reported.
This evening’s fire marks another in a series of incidents that have marred the building’s history.
An explosion in 1976 killed five employees, while a 1997 blast killed another employee, Jose Estrada, and injured about 60 others.
Separate incidents at the facility in both 2006 and 2007 also caused damage, but injuries were limited and there were no fatalities.
