Middlebury teen falls asleep at wheel, may face charges

A Middlebury teen may face charges after an early-morning crash on S.R. 13 north of C.R. 24, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Jacob M. Kelley, 18, fell asleep at the wheel while going south on S.R. 13 at about 2:50 a.m. today, April 21, Cpl. Casey Lehman wrote in a press release. The 1994 Jeep Cherokee Kelley was driving left the road and hit a utility pole.

Police said Kelley admitted to smoking marijuana and synthetic marijuana, and he failed a field sobriety test.

Kelley was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital for further testing and treatment of injuries to his face and arm. He later was released.
