Elkhart man airlifted after car hits heifer in roadway

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, John Schertz, 47, of Elkhart, was westbound on C.R. 38 when his vehicle hit a heifer in the roadway near C.R. 38 around 2 a.m. today, April 13.
Police say the animal landed on the windshield of the Honda passenger car and sheared the roof back.
Schertz had a closed head injury, cuts to the face and complained of severe head, neck, chest and back pain. He couldn't remember the accident, according to police. About 9:30 this morning, a Memorial Hospital official said he was in good condition.
The owner of the animal was cited under Elkhart County's Animal Control Ordinance.
The animal was killed in the collision, according to the report from Patrolman Dustin Lundgren.
