WHITE PIGEON, Mich. — A 64-year-old woman died after coming home to a fire Monday evening in the 68,000 block of Suszeks Road in Porter Township, Cass County.

Arlene Kern died at the scene, but “from circumstances unrelated to the fire,” according to a press release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The fire began around 5:46 p.m. after Henry Kern, 36, of White Pigeon, started a fire in the wood-burning stove, which caused a propane tank to explode, police said. Henry Kern escaped the house unharmed.

Arlene and Rondell Kern arrived home as the fire started, and Arlene died shortly thereafter, police said. Police have not released the cause of death.

The fire remains under investigation.
