NOTRE DAME — The Notre Dame women’s basketball team has cruised its way into the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The top-seeded Irish stomped 16th-seed Liberty 74-43 in the first round of the tournament Sunday afternoon.

Kayla McBride led the Irish with 15 points and three steals in her first NCAA tournament appearance. Natalie Novosel scored 12 points and Devereaux Peters posted 10 points.

Notre Dame (31-3) jolted Liberty (24-9) from the opening minutes of the game, embarking on a quick 11-0 scoring run and grabbing nine of the first 10 rebounds.

Notre Dame out-rebounded Liberty, the top-ranked team in the nation at grabbing boards, 38-29.

The Irish led 44-19 at the half.

Notre Dame will face eighth-seed Cal at home on Tuesday in the second round of the tournament.
