GOSHEN — Several dozen marathon runners came together over the weekend to have some fun at Goshen College, and one of them probably set a world record in the process.

The fourth annual Maple Leaf Marathon, which takes place indoors at the Roman Gingerich Rec-Fitness Center, raised money for LaCasa and Habitat for Humanity.

Participants came from all over the country, but it was a Goshen woman, Melissa Gillette, who likely set a world record.

The record time for a female in an indoor marathon had been about 3 hours, 20 minutes, noted Maple Leaf Marathon organizer Doug Yoder, but Gillette posted a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes on Sunday.

“We believe it's a world record,” Yoder said. The track at the college's fitness center is certified by USA Track & Field, he said, but there are a few hoops to jump through before the world record is considered official.

Gillette was an all-American runner while a student at Goshen College, Yoder said, and her husband, Justin, was an outstanding runner at GC who has won dozens of marathons.

When contacted Sunday afternoon, Yoder was still in the process of figuring out how much money was raised at this year's Maple Leaf Marathon. Previous events have generated about $3,000 each year.

Nearly 75 runners participated in marathons Saturday and Sunday. An extra race was added Saturday to accommodate people on a waiting list, Yoder said.

The annual event is listed on several national running sites, and runners this year came from California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Oklahoma and Georgia, in addition to area residents.

“People probably say we're crazy,” running around an indoor track for 26.2 miles, Yoder said, but several runners mentioned that the Goshen College event does help them prepare for the spring outdoor marathon season.

One of the nice things about running indoors is that all runners can see all the other runners throughout the event. Outdoors, most of the runners probably don't see the leaders at all after the first few minutes, said Yoder, who ran 2 1/2 marathons himself over the weekend.

“We want it to be a fun environment,” he said.
