INDIANAPOLIS — Nick Crume made it to the IHSAA State Finals for the third time in as many seasons.

The Jimtown High School junior now has two third-place showings. Crume placed third at 125 pounds in 2011.

On Saturday, he lost for just the second time during the 2011-12 season then came back to win in the consolation round for third at 126.

Crume (49-2) scored a 9-1 major decision against Lawrence North’s Robert Boston in the third/fourth place match. Crume routed Lebanon’s Clayton Campball by 15-0 technical fall Friday, pinned Hobart’s Nick Ayala in 1:15 in the quarterfinals, then lost 7-0 to Perry Meridian’s Cody LeCount in the semifinals.

“He wanted to be in that final more than anything in life,” said Jimtown coach Mark Kerrn. “It hurts not to reach that goal. It’s an empty feeling not to be under that light (in the state championship match). That was the goal.”

Crume, Kerrn and the Jimtown program were playing the “what-if?” game after the loss to LeCount, while at the same time knowing the quality of the Falcon wrestler.

“If (Nick) could have scored the first takedown, it could have changed the whole match,” said Kerrn.

Kerrn also pointed to how much Crume has accomplished during his prep career, amassing a 143-13 record to date with a single-season school record 51 wins coming in 2011.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him,” said Kerrn.

Four other area wrestlers were in the consolation round. Goshen heavyweight Brandon Daniels (heavyweight) finished fifth. Penn’s Zach Davis (106) and Forrest Glogouski (113) each placed sixth. Penn’s Danny Ginter (152) came in seventh.

Daniels (39-6) pinned Avon’s Brian Snyder in 1:35 in the fifth/sixth place match. Daniels downed Hamilton Southeastern’s Hayden Janney 7-2 Friday then was pinned in 5:41 by Martinsville’s Kaden Suter in the quarterfinals prior to topping Indianapolis Cathedral’s Wesley Barnard 6-2 in the wrestleback round.

Davis (40-12) lost 8-2 to New Palestine’s Tommy Cash in the fifth/sixth-place match. Davis beat East Noble’s Connor Knapp 5-3 in overtime Friday then lost a 12-3 major decision to Lawrence North’s Nathan Boston in the quarterfinals before beating Castle’s Jacob Brown 3-1 in a wrestleback match. Boston was the state champion at 103 in 2011.

Glogouski (41-4) lost 8-4 to Corydon Central’s Baley LaHue in the fifth/sixth-place match. Glogouski defeated Evansville Reitz’s Joshua Davis 9-2 Friday then was pinned in 4:58 by Warsaw’s Jarred Brooks in the quarterfinals before winning 7-5 against Center Grove’s Anthony Schoettle in an overtime wrestleback match.

Ginter (30-8) won by injury default against New Castle’s Conner Mullins in the seventh/eighth-place match. Ginter conquered Friday Indianapolis Cathedral’s Gino Gillum 6-3 Friday then lost 3-0 to Muncie South’s Isaiah Bradley in the quarterfinals before losing 4-0 to Bloomington South’s Ethan Farmer in a wrestleback match.

Memorial’s Brian Seltzer will be honored today as the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association State Coach of the Year at a banquet at Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria in Greenwood. Seltzer also received the award in 2007.
